Street chalking is an amazing and often overlooked method to spread the message of compassion and plant-based living. For many good reasons, it has become an integral part of my vegan activism.
Why you should give it a try:
1. It’s fun!
Chalking is an enjoyable activity that can make you feel like a kid again, allowing you to tap into your creativity while making a positive impact.
2. It has incredible reach
By chalking in public spaces like sidewalks and streets, your messages can reach a diverse audience, often remaining visible for days and capturing the attention of hundreds or even thousands of passersby. Reaching such a large audience with paid advertisement would cost a lot of money.
3. It gets people curious
As a form of creative expression, chalking can be used to convey emotions, tell stories, and evoke empathy. Expressing the beauty and joy of a vegan lifestyle through art can make the movement more appealing and relatable. On my way home from chalk actions, I often come across people who are curiously reading and discussing my chalk writings or take photos of them.
4. It’s easy — everyone can do it!
Chalking requires no special skills. Even simple, straightforward messages can be highly effective in getting people to think about veganism.
5. It’s cheap
Compared to many other forms of activism, chalking is highly affordable, requiring nothing but inexpensive chalk.
6. It’s flexible
You can chalk anytime and anywhere. Choose your own style, wording, and timing, and whether you’re chalking alone or in a group. I often go chalking with friends, but also really enjoy chalking sessions on my own while listening to my favorite music.
What are you waiting for?
If you're a vegan, don't miss the chance to make your mark — literally. Chalk up your message for the animals and the planet, and discover a fun new hobby that spreads awareness and inspires change.
Given the pressing nature of the issues we face, we have no time to lose. Grab some chalk and start turning sidewalks into billboards for a better world!

Tips
Maximize visibility: Select high-traffic locations strategically for chalking activism to maximize visibility and impact, ensuring your message reaches a broader audience.
Share photos of your artwork: If you’re proud of your chalking art, share photos with your friends and family, or post them on social media. This way, you can inspire fellow vegans to do chalktivism as well and let other people know how passionate you are about a topic that should concern us all.
Where do I get chalk?
If you have an art supplies shop or department store around the corner, try it there.
Otherwise, there are pretty good deals on Amazon (for example, here or here or here). It can’t hurt to have some in stock — from experience, you will use them up faster than you think. If you don’t like the feeling of chalk on your hands, I also recommend buying chalk holders.
