It’s a fact, a simple fact. When I shop plant based it’s far cheaper than when I (pre vegan) included cheese or meat. Additionally I can harvest loads of food all year, basically for free, from my garden. And anyone and everyone can grow something, even shoots.

The relatively inexpensive cost of pursuing a vegan diet ought to be one of its many virtues, but in the minds of the meat-eating many, ego and social status corrupt this virtue into a vice, for the wealthy and well off tend to associate a meal of beans and broccoli with penury. This presents a problem, because poverty in a capitalist society is traditionally viewed as a symptom of sloth, as opposed to what it really represents, a societal problem based on inequality of opportunities.

While it is undeniably expensive in terms of dollars and sense to try to sustain oneself by consuming the flesh and liquid secretions of other species, the true cost of this pernicious practice may very well prove to be our survival as a species. Altering course post haste would be in our collective best interest. Ideally, the world would be listening and taking appropriate action.
