Documentaries do indeed inspire some people to take action for animals, as surveys show. For example, in the US and Canada, approximately 13% were compelled to get involved in the movement after watching a full-length documentary, such as Earthlings.
This makes me feel so nostalgic! Before smartphones, a bunch of informal cultural associations appeared in my hometown and watching documentaries and movies together was the thing to do before going out in the evening. Earthlings was on the menu. Thanks to it, it's been 19 years since I stopped eating meat, and gradually over the years my sister, my cousin, friends... Practically everyone I know who watched earthlings changed their consumption habits forever. It all started with being exposed to what really happens in farms by a bunch of cool straight-edge punks with a projector. There's a recent documentary by Mobi (the musician) on punk's role in the vegan / animal activism. Love it! https://youtu.be/W9q1IidazY8?feature=shared
Excellent article on vegan documentaries to view. Yes, we are a fringe community. Try being single, an elder, rurally oriented; then find someone curious enough to entertain a discussion, let alone a potential life companion, willing to share her inner 'spiritual' work. hahaha My laughter is the absurdity for how we have enculturated the ingestion of any animal part from creatures with eyes, such as flesh, lactation or eggs. I began this new dietary regimen in 2011 after being diagnosed with cancer of the doughnut, aka prostate cancer. At the same time, I happened upon Dr. Michael Greger's www.nutritionfacts.org site and have never looked back.
In 2018, I was fully discharged after suffering multiple EBRT sessions (28 consecutive). Sis, who is now a retired RN, said: "jayoh, peeps your age NEVER get discharged." hahaha I told my oncologist at the Halifax VG, that "this so-called lifestyle disease is caused by what's on the fork", since the 2011 FOK doc was my primary initiation. Dr. David Boes said in reply: "I'm beginning to see that now." HUH? How much nutritional teaching do these doctors of any discipline actually receive? Less than 7 hours, over their years to attain the requisite sheepskin alas!
When one looks at how our body has evolved; i.e., teeth, colon length, nails VS claws, the fact that our body makes sufficient cholesterol as well as humans being *the only primate* to secrete an enzyme called alpha- amylase, to aid in the predigestion of real carbohydrates, aka whole grains not stripped of bran & germ...well it's a long discussion.
By the way, the third elective after animal ethics, human nutrition, is the environmental degradation of places like the Amazon basin, etc.
I like DR. Kim Williams' expression. He was a past president of the ACA: "I don't mind dying; I just don't want it to be my fault!"

In Australia, when asked what influenced people to seriously consider veganism for the first time, just under 25% reported a documentary.

There are also studies on the impact of documentaries on meat consumption, for example:
