Great then become a vegetarian. Otherwise stop making stupid arguments that protect the rich assholes who consumed many times the resources the rest do.

We don't fly cows around.

2021 report from the European Federation for Transport and Environment found that private jets are up to 14 times more polluting per passenger than commercial flights.

Dear Lillian,

Thanks a lot for taking the time! I'm truly trying to understand your argument, but I can‘t quite grasp it.

Are you saying I should go vegetarian because I write about environmental issues related to animal agriculture? If that‘s it, I fully agree — no, actually, I go one crucial step further. I‘m a committed vegan. I think we should all be. And I'm very hopeful that much sooner than most people would expect today, we will.

Or are you criticizing me for raising awareness about the impacts of animal agriculture — and addressing it to ordinary end consumers who aren‘t the worst polluters on the planet? In that case, I would have to respectfully object. I agree that we have to hold those ‘up there’ accountable. But the first problem is that there will be little response. And the second problem is that, even if they reacted, it wouldn’t suffice to solve the global crises we’re facing.

Whether we like it or not, if we want to survive on this planet, we all need to do our part — especially those who live in modern societies and have different options to chose from in stores and supermarkets. I hope I'm not doing you an injustice by counting you among these people. If you live in the US or any other Western country, you yourself are — globally speaking — more likely to be one of the 'rich assholes who consume many times the resources the rest do' than you may think. In case you’re interested, I recently wrote another piece titled: "Should We Expect Those “Up There” To Solve The Climate Crisis?” — you might find it interesting:

I am saying don't compare the two. I am vegetarian. Not vegan. Although I try to stay as close as possible to that. I do so because our systems treat animals horribly. But I keep seeing this argument that cows produce more pollution than planes. I think we should not compare. It is an argument that the rich like to throw around to validate their excessive lifestyle. Many of them are vegan or so they say. I don't care. They still suck if they are flying around in private planes. The goal is to go backwards. No more industrial farming. No more private planes. No more excess.

Dear Lilian, I totally agree with most of what you said. Especially this part: "The goal is to go backwards. No more industrial farming. No more private planes. No more excess." However, given the horrific impacts that animal farming has - not only on climate but on so many aspects of life, I feel it IS important that we draw such comparisons. The animal industry is the biggest source of suffering on this planet, and we must do everything to bring it down. Of course, I share your concerns regarding flying and private jets. This is also why I included a section titled "This isn’t an invitation to fly more" in my article above.

This is not to judge or attack you personally, but I also strongly believe that vegetarianism isn't enough. Living vegan is the least we can do. See, for instance, this recent piece that I wrote on dairy: https://veganhorizon.substack.com/p/there-is-nothing-vegetarian-about

Thank you so much for you time. And have a wonderful day!

I agree with you. Vegetarianism is not enough. However I am not so sure strict veganism is realistic. I am so sensitive I pass out every time I go vegan. I have really tried. I am an extreme outlier on the sensitivity spectrum. I struggle to keep up all of my iron, Bs and other minerals. Otherwise I am passing out daily. I wonder about this though. I think in our natural state we are opportunists. I do not need much. We know herbivores will eat meat in rare instances. I have seen videos of deer eating a bird when it flew close enough. Insects may be the thing we end up with.

I have to thank YOU, Lilian, for being so open and honest.

I absolutely hear you - and yet, I truly believe it is worth it to invest the time and see how you can properly plan your diet - and supplement where needed - to avoid supporting the animal industry. But I'm not here to judge you. There is just this deep concern in me, for the animals that are mercilessly confined, mutilated, and killed - and for our climate and environment. I hope you don't mind my being so open and direct. Warm regards!
