Major German Retailer Opens 100% Vegan Supermarket

Another sign that much-needed change is finally coming

Remember when people said that going vegan will never make a difference?

Well, times have changed. The vegan market is rapidly expanding and predicted to become the world’s fastest-growing industry by 2032.

German retailer moves with the times

Making bold strides towards a greener and kinder future and showcasing its forward-looking approach, German supermarket giant REWE is opening a fully vegan branch in Berlin.

Founded in 1927, REWE currently has 164,000 employees and a yearly revenue of around €34 billion. It ranks among the top three of Germany’s largest retail chains, meaning that its strategic decisions will likely motivate competitors to make similar moves.

With over 1,400 vegan products already in its inventory, REWE is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing popularity of plant-based diets. Despite the company's tight-lipped stance on specifics, insiders suggest that construction is underway, with an anticipated opening slated for the coming weeks.

Located in the district of Friedrichshain, near the iconic Oberbaum Bridge, REWE’s venture into veganism underscores the company's commitment to sustainability and catering to evolving consumer demands.

A clear trend

German companies, including famed meat manufacturer Rügenwalder Mühle, are scaling down meat production and investing heavily in vegan product lines, reflecting a broader trend towards plant-based alternatives.

Germany has recently announced a record low in meat consumption. Across the country, around 500 people go vegan every day.
