Powerfully written and well researched. A brilliant argument to care for ourselves and our earth by caring for animals and not eating them. People prove their baseness below other animals with all the cruelty they are capable of. That never ceases to disturb me.

As for transport if you are gettig everything local where there are farms all around you that do not use pesticides and care for the soil or grow most of your food it is way better then Store bought food I buy all my fruits and vegetables i need at the local market and grow some myself .My wife never ate a frozen meal or anything from a box or can we always prepare our food from scratch and harvest a lot of pumpkins and herbs right in our yard. Grow local and eat local way more efficient and it flavor is way better. I will admit I am Fortunate to live in a place like that if you live in a City there are still farmers markets I try not to support big corporations .

Sure! The data shows that, in terms of ethics and sustainability, plant-based should be first priority. But if you can afford growing your own or buying plant-based foods from local farmers, that's even better :)

Why not choose plant-based and local and in packaging that is truly recycleable? This spplies not only to end-consumers but even more so to vegan food manufacturers. It is not just transport and carbon dioxide that is the problem with imported food but there is nothing socially or ecologically responsible about vegans in Europe relying on imports from South America and Southeast Asia where the spread of agriculture and mining are leading to the continued large-scale destruction of tropical forests, extermination of native plants, fungi and animals and genocide against indigenous peoples.

Hi, you're right: plant-based and local is obviously the best.

But for emissions and for all the issues you mentioned (rainforest destruction, biodiversity loss, displacement of indigenous populations), animal agriculture is the main culprit - not imported plant foods. From an ethical and sustainability perspective, it's clear that the first priority should always be plant-based - followed by local consumption, where practicable.

That would be the best scenario. I go to my local fruit and veg shop who buy from local gardeners for most of my food and never use the packaging, I take my own bags and put it in containers in the fridge.
