I am making the slow shift away from animal protein. The concept of eating meat has bothered me for some time, but, living with my husband, who was a serious meat eater, proved too difficult to implement. Now that I’m alone, it seems the right time to make the switch.

Pala Najana's avatar

I appreciate you, Beth.

As I’ve said before, I’m truly sorry for your loss.

I know you’ve always stood for peace and compassion, and this shift feels so in tune with those values. It’s a powerful and deeply personal step. If you ever have any questions or just want to talk through the transition, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here for you. 💚

Beth Anderson's avatar

It’s one by one, isn’t it, this shift? Each person has to confront the reality that they are promoting massive suffering. It’s easy to make oneself blind to this - I have for years. Thank you so much for your compassion and energy to push veganism forward. I appreciate YOU. Thank you for the offer, I will take you up on it❤️

My Mrs is less enthusiastic about veganism than I would like but we made it. Shout out if you want any tips.

Beth Anderson's avatar

Thank you, David! It is a little daunting, trying to figure out what and how to prepare dishes I’ve never done. But the net is an inexhaustible source of vegan recipes, I just need to wrap my head around them :)

I live for the day when animals are regarded as family not food. Like all social movements, it's a long, slow process, especially so because humans tend to be blind to the rights of other species. But you are right, Pala - change IS happening. Thanks for the encouragement!

Pala Najana's avatar

Thank you for being here and for not losing faith, Linda. It's people like you who are laying the groundwork and making this transformative shift possible.

Sascha Camilli's avatar

Thanks for the optimism - we do need to inject some positivity in the movement, as it's been quite a steep hill to climb recently!

Pala Najana's avatar

Thank you so much, Sascha — I truly believe that if we stay committed and support one another, there's real hope ahead. We’ve come this far, and together, we’ll keep pushing this forward. 💚

If that is true, how come tens of millions of vegans don't suffer from these 'health conditions' and are, on average, significantly healthier than meat eaters?

Here, I've compiled something for you: https://veganhorizon.substack.com/p/think-you-have-a-health-argument

Firstly, most doctors are not well-educated in nutrition. The fact that some doctors may still caution against vegan diets doesn't mean anything. We should listen to nutrition experts and international scientific consensus, rather than anecdotal evidence.

Secondly, please show us credible research data (preferably large meta-studies) that support your claims. I can show you tons of evidence, including meta studies and statements from leading health authorities, that clearly show that plant-based eating is nutritionally adequate - for all stages of life.

Hi Jack, I’m sorry for the misunderstanding — and I’m also sorry to hear that you’re dealing with autoimmune disorders.

In nearly 10 years of animal advocacy, I’ve never personally met someone who medically can’t eat plant-based — but of course, rare cases can exist.

Just to clarify: if you’re among those who genuinely can’t avoid animal products for medical reasons, that’s not in conflict with veganism. Veganism is defined as avoiding animal cruelty and exploitation “as far as possible and practicable.” It wouldn’t make sense to expect something from people that is truly impossible.

Vanlife Ruminations's avatar

That’s a debunked myth my friend. There isn’t a single condition that isn’t compatible with a well balanced plant-based diet :)

But I agree, people simply don’t care enough to change

Please show us credible statements from leading authoritative bodies in health and nutrition that support this claim.

This goes squarely against international scientific consensus.

Your last paragraph says it all: it’s a personal matter for you, you don’t care about facts. That’s okay though. You don’t even seem to distinguish between veganism and a plantbased diet, which is telling :)

Keep listening to the same FDA that promotes level 1 carcinogenic foods on their own website and the cancer association that does the same. If they cared about their population, there wouldn’t be as many sick and obese people in the states. As for Europe, most public schools here in France and in Germany are adopting plantbased diets for kids, so your claim is false and made up, like everything else. The research you provided is either outdated, backed by the meat and dairy industries or simply not thorough enough. Samples with 100 people over a period of 6 weeks is a bit of a joke. You seem to live in a bubble like most Americans, which is okay. You’re already sick but you don’t seem to have learned from your experience, that’s sad as hell

Minnie's avatar

Jack, please state which, please?

David Wiggin's avatar

Let’s not forget its not just food. There are great cruelty free shampoos and clothes out there. Plus of course everyone can grow something edible.

Bloody excellent article.

Nancy Kogel's avatar

This is such a powerful and needed piece. Thank you for bringing both clarity and hope to something so many people find overwhelming. I really feel the strength of your vision here.

What especially resonates for me is the sense that we’re not just slowly inching forward, but approaching a kind of tipping point. From a dialectical perspective, change doesn’t move in a straight line. It builds, connects, and then accelerates.

That’s why I find myself feeling that this transformation may come much sooner than timelines like 2050 suggest. As awareness, technology, and moral clarity begin to converge, the rate of change itself starts to increase.

Grateful for your work and the way you help people see both the truth and the possibility. I’d love to share this with others.

Pala Najana's avatar

Nancy, thank you for reading so deeply and for putting it into words so clearly. I’m really glad the piece resonated with you! And yes, that sense of change building under the surface and then suddenly accelerating is exactly how I see it. Things can look slow right up until they’re not.

I try not to get too attached to timelines, but I do feel we may be closer to a real shift than many people think, especially as competition, technological progress, and innovation in the plant based space keep growing, while prices for animal products continue to rise.

Yes, please feel free to share it anywhere you like. If it spoke to you, there is a good chance it will resonate with others too. These days, hope is one of the best gifts we can give. Hugs!

Thank you for this. Some days my heart is so heavy with sorrow for these suffering animals, so good news and hope for a better future helps a lot.

I feel that I can breathe easier now.

Love from a new vegan subscriber from Denmark

Pala Najana's avatar

Thank you for your beautiful message, Roxy – and from the bottom of my heart, thank you for becoming a supporting subscriber. It truly means the world to me. Welcome to Vegan Horizon 💚

I absolutely feel what you’re describing. There are days when my heart feels unbearably heavy thinking about the suffering animals endure. Knowing that others feel this deeply too – and choose compassion – matters more than I can put into words. It’s incredibly important that more and more people are opening their hearts, just as you have.

I try to transform as much of that sorrow as possible into productive energy to challenge this oppression, both online and offline. And we are not alone in this. We have the facts, we have the ethics, and we have a passionate, growing global community of advocates. On top of that, major economic, technological, and demographic trends are increasingly moving in our favor.

From the bottom of my heart, I truly believe that compassion will win in the end. Sending love back to Denmark – and thank you for being here. 🌱

If all the environmentalist and climate change people would

consider what meat and dairy are contributing to our

declining ecosystem, they would readily go vegan

and then when they see the suffering, maybe help spread the word!

Pala Najana's avatar

Fully agree, Max. Thank you for reading.

Regarding the environmental impacts of animal agriculture, I've collected some of the most impressive facts and figures in these articles:

Alberto Begue's avatar

Great article, except for the last point. I don't which experts are those but saying that "the US will be completely vegan by 2050" is absurd. It is not because vegans grew 3000% in 15 years that the same growth will happen in the future. Veganism is more and more attractive, but in a free society, there will always be millions of people not interested, for whatever reason. Regarding the whole world, or most of it, being vegan by 2075, it is also unrealistic. Congrats for your good articles.

Pala Najana's avatar

Hi Alberto, first of all, thank you so much for joining as a supporting subscriber - that truly means a lot. And thank you as well for taking the time to share your thoughts on the article.

I agree with you that these long-term predictions are very uncertain, and a fully vegan US by 2050 may seem unlikely. Still, I do think that several major developments - including the risk of another (and possibly worse) pandemic, escalating antibiotic resistance, intensifying climate impacts, and especially significant price shifts - could drive large-scale moves toward plant-based diets much sooner than many people expect.

And I’m convinced that once these shifts pass a certain threshold, they will start accelerating on their own: once plant-based products become clearly cheaper than animal products, sales and economies of scale will increase, the price gap will widen even more, and at that point even strong pro-meat subsidies won’t be able to counterbalance the economical trend.

But of course, we’ll have to see how things unfold. I’m just as curious as you are!

Loved this. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but this was such a good reminder that real change is happening. Thanks for pulling together so many powerful reasons to stay hopeful.

Pala Najana's avatar

Thanks so much for the kind words. You’re right — it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. But real change is happening, and I’m so glad we can keep lifting each other up.
