There’s a fresh wave of outrage on social media over a four-year-old video in which Logan Paul, an infamous YouTuber, allegedly attempted to kill his dog.
I’m not here to delve into the specifics of the case or to speculate on the truth of the allegations — plenty of commenters have done so already, without reaching a clear conclusion. Instead, this post aims to highlight something far more important.
Beneath the surface, there is a link to an even bigger scandal that has largely escaped public attention. Let me explain. 👇
What’s the outrage about?
It’s alleged that Logan Paul attempted to push his dog into a boat propeller for clicks. In the video circulated online, it appears as if a hand is actively pushing the dog from the boat.
Over 20 thousand people have upvoted this recent post on Reddit. And over a thousand commenters have vented their anger.
“What a f***ing psychopath”
The suspicion that Logan Paul may have attempted to kill his dog has infuriated people — even to the point of wishing for his death:
Don’t get me wrong: I’m not here to defend Logan Paul, who has repeatedly demonstrated reckless and immoral behavior in the past. Nor am I interested in downplaying violence against dogs. Anyone familiar with my content knows that I am strongly opposed to any form of animal cruelty.
But there’s a much bigger and more urgent issue at hand — one that has largely gone unnoticed.
The critical issue that’s being overlooked
On the one hand, it’s encouraging to see so many people seemingly care about animal protection. On the other hand, the outrage voiced against Logan Paul begins to sound hollow when you realize that most of the commenters pay for needless animal abuse on a daily basis.
How absurd to vehemently condemn an alleged attempt to kill a dog, yet consider it perfectly normal to pay for the exploitation and brutal slaughter of other animals that are often more intelligent than dogs.
Pigs, for instance, are among the smartest animals on earth. They are considered smarter than cats and dogs and are thought to have equivalent cognitive abilities to a three-year-old child. Chickens, sheep, and cows exhibit complex thought processes and surprising intelligence as well.
Farmed animals in the meat, dairy, and egg industries are regularly caged, tormented, ripped away from their families, mutilated, treated like worthless objects, and mercilessly killed.
And that’s not all. Many of them are beaten, whipped, hanged, stabbed, skinned alive, buried alive, boiled alive in scalding-hot water, slowly suffocated in gas chambers, ground up alive in a macerator, or hammered to death — even on “high welfare” farms.
Take a look, once again, at the angry comments above. Isn’t it weird that most of these commenters, who condemn Logan Paul’s “psychopath behavior” and even wish him dead, essentially do the same to other innocent animals on a daily basis?
Why this issue matters most
I’m not saying that attempting to push a dog into a boat propeller would be acceptable in any way. However, the issue I’m highlighting here is even more pressing.
Farmed animals are often killed in ways that are no less cruel than being shredded by a boat propeller — after spending their entire lives being exploited in captivity.
Also, obviously, the animal agriculture industry impacts a vastly greater number of animals: every 30 minutes, as many animals are killed for human consumption as people have died in the six years of the Second World War — the deadliest conflict in human history.
“Thousands of people who say they ‘love’ animals sit down once or twice a day to enjoy the flesh of creatures who have been utterly deprived of everything that could make their lives worth living and who endured the awful suffering and the terror of the abattoirs.”
―Jane Goodall
This is where you come in
Focusing on our consumption of animal products is crucial not only because it represents the biggest human-made source of suffering in the world, but also because it’s something we can directly impact with our own choices. While complaining about other people’s behavior can be very important, the most effective and lasting change comes from the actions we take ourselves.
The video of Logan Paul and his dog is four years old now, and the dog has fortunately survived unharmed, but farmed animals continue to suffer and are brutally killed every day.
I’ve been a Vegan for years and was a Vegetarian for years before that. People I know seem to know all about the cruelty involved in getting, rearing and preparing animals for food. They still eat them though, even the ones who say yes, it’s cruel.
Very well written. It's what I've been saying for decades. The hypocrisy of meat-eating "animal lovers" is breathtakingly tragic.
